Highlands of Durham Games

The Highlands of Durham Games celebrates its 16th year – an annual event that runs Saturday and Sunday in Elgin Park, Uxbridge.

Admission is $20 for adults – kids under 16 are free.  This is a multi-facetted event with Highland animals, cars and a host of Celtic events including Dancing, Pipe Bands and of course the Celtic heavy sports events such as the Caber toss and hammer throw. This is a great opportunity to photograph a variety of activities, marching bands, dancers’ livestock, and regalia et al; also an opportunity to sample Gaelic fare and check on your Celtic roots.

Entrance is off of Elgin Park Drive.

Meet on the grounds at 9:30 AM in front of the Lions Booth.

Mike’s photo tips, well first off your tripod will be a hazard (did you ever think you hear me say that?)  This is an action packed day I’d recommend ASA 400 to keep your options open, of course shoot RAW, if you typically boost your saturation  don’t, you’ll have plenty of vibrant colours already.  For the sporting events use burst mode, and consider pre-focussing and shooting manual focus, that auto focus takes time and you’ll miss so shots.  This is typically a dusty dirty environment – you want to minimize your lens changing activities so lens with maximum (broadest)  zoom capability is best.
